Video: Woman Accused Of Having Relationship With Underage Girl

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Smithville woman is accused of having a relationship with an underage girl in Lowndes County, after pictures were found.

Shannan Brooke Thompson, 25, is charged with exploitation of a child.

Lowndes County investigators say the two met on social media and in person.

A family member of the victim found the images and took them to deputies.

Thompson was arrested at her Monroe County home.

She is out of jail on bond.

Investigators say as access to new technology, apps, and cell phones increases, their training must keep pace.

“When it was chat rooms, it was groups of people communicating all at the same time with each other. Now with the apps that are out there, it’s more of a one-on-one type deal. The child is communicating with an adult and there’s no other people around to see what’s going on,” said Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lt. Tony Cooper.

Overseas websites don’t always recognize the U.S. court system and laws, making it difficult for investigators to see if there is any illegal activity.

Law enforcement also say you must know what you child is looking at online.
