Video: Woman Accused Of Assaulting High School Basketball Coach Pleads Guilty
MONROE CO., Miss. (WCBI) – A Monroe County woman is sentenced to one year of house arrest for attacking her daughter’s high school basketball coach.
Heather Thompson plead guilty Tuesday in Monroe County Circuit Court to assaulting a school official. The charge is a felony.
She entered the plea and was sentenced after initially asking the judge for a continuance yesterday morning. She will be on probation for four years following the year of house arrest.
Thompson was arrested last December in connection with the incident following a game in which she assaulted girls’ basketball coach Sue Verner.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a school policy that requires players who ride the school bus to a game, to also ride the bus back.
Verner was left with severe injuries to her eye and family members tell WCBI she has had two surgeries since the assault.
District Attorney John Weddle told WCBI on Wednesday that the approval of the victim and the lack of a criminal history contributed to this sentence.
