WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) – There were smiles and joy in the air as the Winona community gathered at the First Baptist Church to celebrate 175 years of existence Sunday.
It was a full house at the First Baptist Church in Winona, as residents gathered reflecting on the history of the church since it’s foundation in 1837.
“It’s an exciting time for the church , it’s a glorious past and it’s celebration of past but it’s also launch us out into the future as we continue to share the good news of Jesus Christ,” said Pastor Chris Aldridge.
The service started out with a song and members joined in prayer. Dozens of new and old members attended the Sundays worship to celebrate the churches milestone. One member looks back on when he first attended the church.
“I first joined this church 81 years ago in 1931, I didn’t know this church was that old,” said member Charles Hull.
“For me to be a part of this milestone in the life of our church at this time in it’s history certainly is an overwhelming and humbling experience,” added Associate Pastor T. R. Darsey.
The anniversary celebration showcased exhibits telling a history lesson about the churches beginning and discussed the congregations future.
“I feel very excited and very glad that it’s about to be over it’s been a long road. There’s over 60 people involved in this setting up for the day and they did wonderful work,” said Chair person of committee Dorothy Box.
Sundays celebration was a way for the old members to take a look back and a chance for new members to look forward to the 175 years. The celebration concluded with music and members getting together to share a fellowship luncheon.
