WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) – The Winona Christian School cancelled classes on Tuesday after the school gym caught fire. Teachers and students at Winona Christian School had to evacuate Monday morning after fire broke out on the ceiling of the gym.
“They noticed a flame coming up over in the corner of the gym at the top. Just within a matter of about two minutes, the whole ceiling of the gym was on fire. We were able to get our students out safely and our kids in the cafeteria, we got them out safely as well,” says Headmaster Cameron Wright.
Classes were cancelled for one day but homecoming activities had been planned inside the gym this week.
“We’re going to continue on with homecoming here. Right now, the power source to our scoreboard is affected but we should have that up and going before Friday,” says Wright.
Student athletic uniforms and the cafeteria were also damaged by the smoke but the Headmaster says they hope the community will provide support until repairs are complete.
“Our kids are going to have to bring sack lunches for a little while. We’re going to look at some of the local businesses and see if they can help provide food for a few weeks as far as getting it to us at a good cost for our kids so that they can have something to eat this week,” says Wright.
Headmaster Wright also says this year’s basketball season will have to be played at a different location due to the fire damage.
Fire officials have begun their investigation but have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Classes will be in session this week.
