West Point shooting victim now behind bars

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – A shooting case in West Point takes a bizarre twist as the focus of the investigation shifts from the alleged shooters to the victim.

It’s a saying many people have heard before “if you mess with my child I’ll hurt you.”

That saying became a reality earlier this month after police say a family took matters into their own hands.

Demonta Cantrell was shot in the head on December 17 at West Point’s Marshal Park.

Now, he finds himself in jail on child pornography charges.

“The two arrests that we made yesterday are tied with the shooting that happened a couple of weeks ago,” said Chief Avery Cook.

Deonta Congious is also charged with Child Pornography in that investigation.

West Point Police Chief Avery Cook says Cantrell was sexually involved with an underage family member of Jason Dean’s and Lacequiu Starks.

“The shooting stemmed from a juvenile being involved, and that led to the juveniles father getting upset and doing what he did,” said Chief Cook.

Dean and Starks were charged with Aggravated Assault after the Marshal Park shooting.

Investigators believe the men found out about a sexually explicit video on social media and went to confront Cantrell.

“Once the video started sharing, and people started putting it out there got to the parent, and the juvenile parent brought it to us and showed us, and we were able to get a subpoena for the phone,” said Chief Cook.

Cook says sexual videos were found on Cantrell’s phone.

Court documents show investigators charged Congious after a video was shared on Facebook Messenger.

“We don’t know if there are any other victims out there now we are still like I said investigating still going through the phone,” said Chief Cook.
