West Point Police Investigate Shooting

WEST POINT, Miss. — At around midnight officers of the West Point Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex on Dunlap Road in reference to gunshots being fired. Upon arrival officers discovered a man, who name is not being released, lying face down on the ground. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The victim reported to officers that he was approached by an unknown man who attempted to rob him. A witness to the incident reported that the victim was holding an infant in his arms when a man appeared wearing a bandana, dark clothing and a brown hat. The man allegedly displayed a gun and demanded money. When the man fled with the baby he was fired upon by the shooter.

The shooter fled the scene before police arrived. The child was unharmed in the attack. The victim was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point and later transferred to NMMC in Tupelo. His condition is not known. Police collected evidence at the scene and are currently following up on leads.

According to Chief of Police Tim Brinkley, “Investigators have already developed a list of suspects and expect to make an arrest in this case very soon”. This case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers or the West Point Police Department at (662) 494-1244. A reward of up to $1,000 is available to anyone providing information leading to an arrest in this case.
