West Point, Miss. (WCBI) – A West Point man faces a number of charges after eluding police for nearly a year, but his time on the run came to a crashing halt.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley says an officer turned on his blue lights when he recognized 24-year-old Jamond Nance driving a car Wednesday afternoon on Main Street.
Nance then turned, ran a stop sign and hit another vehicle at High and Broad. Brinkley says the crash was not the result of a high-speed chase. “The officer never had the opportunity to give chase because once the blue lights were activated the suspect immediately turned right, accelerated and crashed,” said Brinkley.
Nance was treated and released from a hospital. His unidentified passenger wasn’t injured.
The driver of the other vehicle received minor injuries.
Inside Nance’s crashed car, police found two large bags of what appeared to be marijuana and a loaded handgun that was stolen.
Nance is being held on five prior felony warrants.
“He is being held in the Clay County Detention Center. He was served with 1 felony warrant for fleeing to avoid prosecution. Another felony warrant was issued last year following a Grand Jury indictment for felony possession of marijuana. He posted bond but failed to appear in Circuit Court. A separate charge of felony fleeing is pending as well as another charge of felony possession of marijuana and possession of a stolen firearm, which also constitutes a felony. Bond on existing charges is $75,000.00 but additional charges are pending including those associated with the accident and injuries to another person,” stated a press release from West Point police.
Brinkley says a network of people have helped Nance escape capture and charges will be filed against them as the investigation evolves.
