LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Construction should start next week on Lowndes County’s newest industry.
Supervisors today awarded Weathers Construction a $3,113,415 contract to renovate and add on to the county’s existing industrial spec building across from Stark Aerospace near Golden Triangle Regional Airport.
It’ll be home to CalStar Products, a Wisconsin-based company that plans to make environmentally friendly construction materials like bricks, pavers and stones.
The bids were almost $300,000 but it took some reconfiguration to make it happen. Bids opened last month came in $400,000 above estimates, sending architects and the company back to the drawing board to make adjustments.
Weathers was the low bidder among six companies. It’s bid was $158,000 below the next lowest bid from T & M Steel Erectors.
Following construction meetings this week, Weathers hopes to start work Monday.
Once work is completed next year, CalStar will initially employ 17 people and at least 58 within three years.
