WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI/Legends Tour) – Old Waverly Golf Club announces it will host the 2014 ISPS Handa Cup, a Legends Tour event, September 25-28.
Set for its ninth staging this fall, the ISPS Handa Cup is an international team event that pits U.S.-born LPGA Legends against internationally born LPGA Legends in 36 holes of head-to-head stroke play competition.
The Legends Tour is the official senior tour of the LPGA and features competition for LPGA veterans age 45 and over.
“Old Waverly is proud to once again host a premier golf event in Mississippi, continuing our long relationship with the LPGA and women’s golf,” said George Bryan, founder of Old Waverly Golf Club, which hosted the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open won by Juli Inkster.
“This is a great opportunity for golf fans to get close to the game and to the Legends who helped put women’s golf on the map,” added Bryan. “It’s also an opportunity for these golfers to experience the warmth and hospitality that are trademarks of Old Waverly and the people of Mississippi.”
The Legends Tour showcases more than 100 members, including 12 LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame members. In addition to Old Waverly favorite Nancy Lopez, legendary standouts such as Beth Daniel, Pat Bradley, Patty Sheehan, Laura Davies, Sally Little and Jan Stephenson have previously teed it up in the ISPS Handa Cup.
The ISPS Handa Cup schedule will include team practice rounds, a pro-am and 36 holes of team and singles matches on the weekend. Players engage in stroke play within each match and team points are awarded for wins and ties.
Previously dominated by the American team since 2006, last year’s Handa Cup was won by the World Team, 27-21, for the first time in the event’s history. Team USA will seek to regain the Handa Cup on the challenging fairways and greens of Old Waverly.
Team captains and rosters will be announced in May. Grounds passes are $10 per day and will be available for sale at locations throughout Mississippi, as well as online at www.thelegendstour.com and www.oldwaverly.com. A clubhouse pass can be obtained for $25 per day.
“This is truly an event for the entire family and a great way for sports fans to see that athleticism, class and competitive spirit are ageless,” Bryan added.
