Video: This Year’s Outbreak Of Armyworms Hits Area Lawns Hard

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Homeowners throughout our area are battling a tough foe.  Armyworms are especially bad this year.

The small worms can cause a lot of damage to yards by attacking the grass, turning the yard from bright green to brown, in a few days.

Experts say the infestation is especially bad this year, because of strong winds from the south, which deposited a lot of moths in our area. The moths lay eggs and the moths hatch from those eggs.

Mitchell Scruggs is owner of Scruggs Farm, Lawn and Garden.  He recommends homeowners spray their yards with “Bifenture,” an agricultural insecticide that kills the worms.

He encourages homeowners to take action.

“No doubt, if they have Armyworms, they need to spray, because the sod costs way too much money to take a chance. After they eat all the roots up , they will feed on the brown grass, they will eat everything up, they are really bad,” Scruggs said.

Scruggs says this year’s outbreak of Armyworms is one of the worst he’s ever seen.
