Video: Work To Start Soon On Tremont Park Honoring Tammy Wynette

TREMONT, MISS. (WCBI) – Plans are coming together for a park honoring a famous country music star in Itawamba County.WCBI’s Allie Martin tells us work will soon begin on the “Tammy Wynette Legacy Park.”Organizers hope the park will honor the singer and draw in visitors.

This is how the world first came to know Tammy Wynette, but before becoming one of the most influential female country singers, her audience was made up of friends and family from Tremont and Itawamba County.

“We knew she would be famous. She could sing. All you had to say, you could meet her in the hall and say, Wynette, sing me so and so, she’d just sing.  And the main thing about Wynette, that’s what we called her, is that she never ever changed, fame did not make her not realize her roots,” said Holly Ford, who was one of Wynette’s classmates. She’s also on the Tammy Wynette Legacy Park Committee.

The group will soon own this 32,000 building, that was once a garment factory and furniture company.

A 2 point 5 million dollar renovation,  paid for with state bond money, will transform the building into a world class attraction honoring the first lady of country music.

Plans call for a restaurant, an area for live music, a gift shop and other activities.  Four acres around the building will have a children’s play area.

One of the main goal’s for the project is to bring in tourists and give Tremont an economic development boost.

“What it was started for was to enhance the businesses here in Tremont, to do something they needed, something to give them a shot in the arm,” said Robert Whitehead, of the Tammy Wynette Legacy Park Committee.

Renovations are expected to begin next month, with construction taking about a year.

Wynette’s most famous song, “Stand By Your Man” was voted as the best country song of all time by a panel of music writers, producers and stars.
