TUPELO, MS (WCBI)-Hundreds of women took time during their lunch hour to learn about the importance of early detection for heart disease. The annual NMMC’s “Spirit of Women” hosted a “Women in Red Luncheon” at Tupelo’s First Baptist Church. The event is a way to teach women about the signs of early heart disease. It is also an opportunity to talk about the importance of healthy diet, proper exercise and regular checkups. There were a number of women who are survivors of heart disease in the audience . 67-year-old Shelia Mason had some blockages in her arteries last year and now has a pacemaker.
“I was real short of breath, I couldn,’t, didn’t want to do anything and now I have my energy back .”
With Mrs. Mason, she had an EKG, I think a common misperception is a resting EKG can rule out heart problems and as in her case it did not , so there are other tests that can be done and should be done to evaluate people for heart disease.”
Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women. February is American Heart Month.
