STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/MSU Athletics) – Behind four runs batted in from junior Caroline Seitz, the Mississippi State softball team (23-18, 3-10 SEC) notched a 7-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 11 LSU (30-13, 5-11 SEC) to open Super Bulldog Weekend.
After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs scored five runs over the next two inning to jump out front of the Tigers and never look back in the Southeastern Conference series opener.
Senior Kayla Winkfield finished the night 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored, while Seitz also posted a two-hit performance.
“We came out with good energy today and were able to have quality team at bats,” head coach Vann Stuedeman said. “It was a great game played by both sides and what a fun way to start off Super Bulldog Weekend.”
The Tigers did not wait long to pounce as a triple to open the game put them in prime scoring position. A Bulldog fielding error gave LSU the first run of the game. The Tigers scored another after a pair of wild pitches and a sacrifice fly.
In the home half of the first, MSU got a run back. Winkfield led off the frame with a triple to the gap and came across on a sacrifice fly from junior Katie Anne Bailey, bringing the deficit to 2-1.
State’s offense returned in the second by loading the bases with no outs as a walk to freshman Sabrina Turner tied the game and reloaded the bases. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game on a groundout from Winkfield that put the score at 3-2. Junior Caroline Seitz capped the four-run inning with a two-run single that put her side ahead 5-2.
Seitz would do damage again in the fourth, this time with a two-run double to score baserunners from first and second and put MSU on top 7-2.
The Bulldog defense kept LSU in check for the remainder of the contest and retired the final four Tigers in order to secure the victory in the series opener.
Junior Alexis Silkwood (3-5) collected the complete-game victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits along with having struck out six on the night.
Starting pitcher Carley Hoover (11-6) took the loss of the Tigers after giving up all seven Bulldog runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
The teams will return to Nusz Park Saturday for a nationally televised affair with a 7:02 p.m. CT first pitch on SEC Network.
