WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – West Point selectmen will have less money in their pocket due a pay cut. The city leaders voted to decrease their annual salaries from $18,000.00 to $14,500.00.
Mayor Robbie Robinson says the Board has been discussing the salary change for a couple years.
Selectmen analyzed the Municipal Salary and Benefits Survey from the Stennis Institute of Government at MSU. That’s when it was revealed Columbus and Starkville city leaders made less money.
“They’ve studied comparable sized towns and municipalities throughout the state of Mississippi, the size of West Point, and we feel that $18,000 salary was just too much. We have a board that believes in public service.”
The salary cut went into effect Wednesday, coinciding with the beginning of the fiscal year.
