LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Students at West Lowndes High School are getting into the holiday spirit this year by making donations to local organizations. Last month, the Junior Class at West Lowndes collected dozens of items including clothes and toiletries for others in need.
The holiday season is a time for giving and students at West Lowndes High School wanted to extend a helping hand to families in need.
“We did this to support Safe Haven Women’s Shelter and also we supported Last House on the Block Sober Living Environment for men. We wanted to show that a group of teenagers cared about the community and we wanted to give back and just spread the holiday cheer,” says Jay Little, Jr. Class President.
Tonya Pickens works with children at the Safe Haven Shelter for women. Pickens talked to students about the dangers of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
“Sometimes some of them come in with only the clothes on their backs and they have nothing else. So the personal hygiene items that we receive as well as the clothes are a great asset to our agency,” says Pickens.
Students say the event is a lesson about supporting others as well as how to treat one another.
“It’s wrong to abuse someone in a relationship and that should always get help whenever you get abused,” says Quadarion Brooks, a junior at West Lowndes High School.
This is the 2nd year students at West Lowndes have donated to the Safe Haven Shelter.
The Junior Class at West Lowndes High School also volunteers with the United Way each month.
