NORTH MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – Rainy days and cool nights are causing headaches for some Mississippi farmers.
Statewide, more land was expected to be devoted to corn production this year, but frequent rains and standing water have kept farmers out of their fields during the critical planting weeks.

Early planting usually means that corn is established when the dry, hot weather of mid-summer can damage younger plants. But even that may not guarantee success.
Cooler night time temperatures are slowing early growth.

In most areas, this week is critical for getting corn in the ground.

Demand is up this year, driven largely by increases in ethanol production.
