Video: Voters Head to the Polls for Congressional Special Election and Lowndes Co. School Bond Votes

NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) -There’s a special Congressional election on the ballot. However, it’s a 44 million dollar bond issue that is drawing more turnout in Lowndes County. Last year voters rejected a similar measure, but as WCBI’s Renae Skinner reports, educators there’s a different result tonight.

If this bond issue passes it will include 11 million dollars for a career tech center. 26 million of that money will go towards a new high school on the New Hope Campus.

The bond issue will also include 3 million dollars in upgrades at the Caledonia campus, and 1.9 million will be put towards a new field house at Caledonia, and renovations on the West Lowndes campus will use up 2 million of the bond issue.
Sixty percent approval is needed for it to pass.

A special election is underway for the First District Congressional Seat. WCBI’s Allie Martin has been at polling places throughout the area and has more from a Tupelo voting location.. Allie ?

Thanks, I’m here at Tupelo Precinct Two in the Joyner neighborhood. There’s been a steady stream of voters throughout the day for this special election.

In Tupelo, there is only one issue on the ballot, as voters are selecting a successor to the late Congressman Alan Nunnelee, who passed away in February.

This is a non partisan election, so a candidate’s party is not listed beside the candidate’s name. The top two finishers, regardless of party affiliation will advance to a runoff June the second.

All thirteen candidates have been hitting the airwaves and the campaign trail, getting their message out to the voters.

Poll watchers say turnout is better than expected.

“So far, it’s good, we’re a little over 400. Our role here is to make sure everybody gets a chance to vote and make sure they vote in the proper place.”

Polls close at 7, if you haven’t voted you have a little bit of time and we want to remind you that you have to have a government issued photo id to cast your vote. For now we will send it back to you in the studio.
