NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) -In today’s run-off election Republican Trent Kelly and Democrat Walter Zinn will face each other for the District 1 Congressional seat.
Kelly, is a military veteran and a district attorney. Zinn is an attorney and former political consultant.
The First District stretches from the Tennessee line down to Winston County.
Republicans have held the seat for most of the past 20 years, but 53 years before that, the seat belonged to a Democrat.
The winner of this election will serve the rest of a two year term left vacant by the death of Republican Alan Nunneleee in February.
On the May 11th special election, Walter Zinn took 17% of the votes, and Kelly took 16%.
There has been a steady stream of voters here at the old Lee County Courthouse, but turnout still low in the First District special election.
Since May 12th, Republican Trent Kelly and Democrat Walter Zinn have been campaigning hard in the first district. Although heavily outspent by Kelly, Zinn has made the rounds in the area, just last week he was in Tupelo where he was endorsed by the Mississippi Association of Educators.
Kelly’s campaign has raised and spent a lot more money than the Zinn campaign. Recently, Kelly was in Washington DC for a fundraiser with key Republican leaders, including Senator Roger Wicker.
A quick survey of several polling places in Tupelo showed voter turnout where it was about three weeks ago.
Both candidates are campaigning right up until polls close at 7. Walter Zinn will be at a watch party in Pontotoc and Trent Kelly will be in Tupelo as the results come in. for now we’re at old Lee County Courthouse, we will send it back to you in the studio.
