TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Volunteers are helping American Legion Post 49 save hundreds of thousands of dollars in construction costs.
About 30 volunteers are framing and roofing the new 7,000 square foot headquarters for Tupelo’s American Legion, which took a direct hit from the tornado in April of last year.
Volunteers have already helped clear downed trees and limbs from a portion of the property. Savings from the debris work and this week’s project are estimated at around $260,000.
“That’s a tremendous savings to get us to our goal to get us to be able to pay for the entire building. The key factor is, we still have to pave the road, re do the parking lot and buy contents and as you can see, the back 4 or 5 acres is still full of debris and downed trees so we will have to also pay to have that removed,” said Post 49 Commander Mike Pettigrew.
Pettigrew hopes to open the new headquarters on Veteran’s Day. If you would like to donate to the building fund, go to , http://www.gofundme.com/post49tupeloms; or www.createfoundation.com
