TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – For years, Jennifer Baker has been involved in martial arts. She is a Mixed Martial Arts fighter, and helps keep the streets safe as a Tupelo Police Officer.
Through her job, Officer Baker sees far too many women who are victimized by violence. That’s why she is teaming up with Inspire Fitness and Kickboxing to teach a self defense course for females.
“If you don’t want to use a gun, if you’re not comfortable with it, at least know how to protect yourself, how to defend yourself and how to decrease the likelihood of you becoming a victim of violence,” Officer Baker said.
Baker will be teaching a course from a company called SSGT Defensive Tactics known as “The Equalizer.” She is one of three certified instructors statewide for the program.
Many of the techniques taught in “The Equalizer” are also used by SSGT to teach self defense skills to law enforcement officers.
Owners of Inspire Fitness and Kickboxing say they were looking for a way to give back to the community and the self defense course was a perfect fit.
“With everything going on in the world nowadays, it’s one of those things where, even if you never have to use it, it can be one of those things that saves your life,” said Issac Ware, co-owner of Inspire Fitness and Kickboxing.
The $80 course fee will benefit the local domestic violence shelter known as SAFE.
“We decided it would be a great way to help out women who are in bad situations, who are in need of shelter, who may be abused, who may be going through something nobody should go through,” said Adam Smilanich, co-owner of Inspire Fitness and Kickboxing.
Classes start January 23rd. For more information, call Inspire Fitness and Kickboxing at 662 368 8441.
