Tupelo, Miss. (WCBI) – It was a perfect evening for a little jog.650 Tupelo area elementary school students took part in the second annual Boerner to Run Challenge at Fair Park.
The Kindergarten through second grade kids took part in a half mile run, and the third through sixth graders ran an entire mile. Bo Boatner is a P-E teacher at Lawndale elementary and chairman of the Boerner run challenge. He says it is important for young children to run for distance.
“They try t-ball and there’s all kinds of sports for young kids but I don’t think the distance running is pushed enough in a child appropriate way of course.”
The Boerner to run challenge is named after the late Hank Boerner, who was director the Wellness Center until he passed away in December 2012. Boatner says Boerner was actually helping organize the yet to be named children’s run before he died. Boatner says Boerner was an inspiration to so many people and that is why the race has become so popular.
