NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – Deer hunting season may be over, but hunters throughout our area are comparing stories of their biggest kills. We had tons of entries for our annual “Biggest Buck Contest” and one of the top hunters is a seven year old with a great aim. WCBI’s Allie Martin has more.
It was day one of deer hunting season last fall, and Trae Wiygul took his 7 year old son, Frank, out for his first hunt with his own rifle.”
“He managed to get a doe that first day, he said ‘Dad, this is easy,’ I said no, it’s not that easy.”
The next hunt, there was nothing to shoot at, but on their third father-son outing at a Tippah County Hunting Club, everything changed.
“At 1 30, we were in the deer stand, we just started, at about 4 30, we saw a big buck and then Dad nudged me and he said, ‘Do you want to shoot it? And I said yes, I shot it and then it ran until it dropped.”
Trae, who is a veteran hunter, was more nervous than his son, when he saw the 13 point buck.
“I have never shot a deer that big, I’ve never seen a deer, with the opportunity to shoot a deer that big.”
The buck had made an appearance on a stationary camera at the hunt club.
“Our manager at the property, he texted me a picture of it, said look at what we have roaming on our grounds. When he went down I took that first picture I knew it was that one.”
After the 198 pound buck was loaded into the truck, Frank entered WCBI’s “Biggest Buck Contest.” He even penned a letter with his entry.
“I killed my first buck, it was a 13 point, it was the biggest deer in the entire hunt camp, it was so big. November 14 2014 Frank Wiygul.”
Frank’s buck is mounted and will be displayed above the fireplace. In Tupelo I’m Allie Martin WCBI News.
There was another young entry that caught the judge’s attention. Riley Carter from Aberdeen placed second in the 16 and under division. Here she is with her 11 point.
Riley wins a shoulder mount from The Trophy Room and Malco Movie Passes.
Frank wins a camp pop up blind from Oktibbeha County co op and evergreen ag, as well as Monster Jam tickets.
Roy Oswalt won the title in WCBI’s Biggest Buck contest but he wasn’t the only prize winner because we had plenty of other trophy deer entered by hunters young and old from throughout Northeast Mississippi. In the men’s competition, Isaac Winston won Mossy Oak apparel and a shoulder mount from the Trophy Room taxidermy in Columbus with the second biggest buck.
The deer taken in Oktibbeha County scored more than 175 on the Boone and Crockett scale. Dixie Edwards of Okolona had the big buck in the women’s division a deer that had a 150 Boone and Crockett rating. She won a Bushnell Range Finder from the Oktibbeha County Co-op and Evergreen Ag.
