TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo’s Major Thoroughfare Program will continue for another five years.
Tuesday’s final vote count was 1634 in favor of the program, and 188 against. That means Phase Six of the program will be funded with a 10 mill tax levy.
Among the projects slated for phase six, are improvements to South Thomas Street, widening West Jackson Extended from Airpark road to Coley Road and five laning Eason Boulevard between Veterans and Briar Ridge Road.
City leaders are pleased with the result.
“Eighty- nine percent, you rarely get that in any election, it is consistent with what the people of Tupelo have done in the past but it’s very rare you get an eighty-nine percent consensus on anything.”
“It’s absolutely critical, had the program not passed, we would either have to end the thoroughfare program all together or end many of the services, or cut back on personnel for the city of Tupelo, any way, the citizens recognized that and stepped up to the plate.”
Next, engineers will be selected for the projects and the projects will be prioritized. The Major Thoroughfare Program raises 20 million dollars over the five year period.
