TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A Tupelo mother and homemaker is named parent of the year for that city’s school district. Ragan Milner received the honor during the regular meeting of the Tupelo Public School Board this afternoon at the high school.
Milner and her family moved to Tupelo seven years ago, and the former school teacher became involved right away at Thomas Street Elementary. She has volunteered at three science labs in the district, she has also worked with Parents for Public Schools, she started a writing lab at Lawndale Elementary School and recently helped organize a Science Fun Day at Milam.Milner says it’s vital for parents to be involved in their child’s education.
“It’s an experience like no other,” said Milner. “You know you’re making a difference and you can look at the faces of the children around you and see you’re making a difference, when they start to wave at you in the halls and come up and hug you you know you’re making a difference in their lives, and two it gives you an insight into what is going on in your children’s schools and what they’re exposed to and what kind of education they’re receiving.”
Milner and her husband have two children in Tupelo Public Schools.
