TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Kindergarteners and their teachers at one elementary school are learning that they too can help the family of the Tupelo police officer killed in the line of duty last year. For the past two weeks, volunteers from across the country have been helping remodel the home of Beth Stauffer. It is the same home in Tupelo’s Joyner neighborhood she shared with her husband, Sergeant Gale Stauffer, who was gunned down December 23rd by a bank robber.
Various groups throughout the area have fed the volunteers, taking part in the project known as “Build for Beth.” And, kindergarten teachers at Thomas Street elementary wanted to feed the workers and they also asked their students to bring loose change for the effort.
“We sent a note home to our parents and just told them if they would bring a dollar donation, that they could wear their pajamas on Friday, and we did not send this home till Thursday and on Friday we ended up with about $250 the children brought in,” said Kindergarten teacher, Robin Maynard. “Some came in with ones, some with twenties, we had a couple of kids who came in with a handful of change and said they had gotten it out of their piggy bank that they wanted to do something to help.”
Some of the money was used to buy food for a dinner for the volunteers, the rest was given to the “Build for Beth” project. Construction will wrap up this Saturday with a neighborhood carnival and random acts of kindness in the area.
