TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo’s Gum Tree Park is the site of the annual Community Forward Parade and Festival.
For nine years the event has been held to foster better relations between the community and the police department.
Tupelo City Council President Nettie Davis thinks it is a good way to remove the misconceptions many in the community have about the police.
“Many times we have a stigma against police officers. And what I have always tried to do is work with the relationships. And sometimes there’s still problems that happen all over the world as far as people getting along with the police,” Davis said.
Davis says the Community Forward event has been successful in helping the community realize that the police are here to protect the citizens.
She says she is really looking forward to working with the new mayor and new police chief to continue to make progress in this area.
