Video: Tupelo Council Approves Joyner Overlay District

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tupelo City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve an overlay district to oversee rebuilding efforts in the Joyner neighborhood.

Members of Joyner’s neighborhood association approved the plan, which creates a design review committee to sign off on new construction and significant repairs to existing properties.

The city planning committee approved the initial plan to create the five member body. The neighborhood association picked three members with the Mayor and City Council each choosing a member.

The goal is to preserve the historic nature of the neighborhood.

Today’s vote was 4 to zero. Three members of the council were absent, but no one voiced opposition to the plan.
