TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)-Every year thousands of contestants from different states try to design the best flying aircraft for the National Red Bull Flugtag competition. One Tupelo business is doing just that.
Since 1992, The National Red bull Flugtag competition has seen thousands of man-made air crafts from all over take a leap of faith.
This year, the first and only team from Mississippi will be making that same jump.
“Red Bull approached us. They wanted a team from Mississippi. We were a good fit. So we looked at the events it’s good clean fun,” says Josh West.
Josh West is the CEO of the Blue Delta Jean Company located in Tupelo where people can go to get jeans made specifically for their fit.
West says accepting the challenge was the easy part.
“Red Bull gives us very limited restrictions on how the air craft can be designed. No stored energy and so we had to recruit a team to build it and then we had to recruit a team to fly it,” says West.
“The flight deck is 100 feet long and it’s 30 feet high. So we have to do a 30 second skit and then we have to push our craft and the pilot over the 30 foot cliff and we see how far we go. I’m excited to see the outcome for sure,” says Nick Weaver.
What better way to prepare for the competition than go to the local experts.
“We went to Ole Miss engineering with a very just we can build jeans but we cannot design a craft and they have been very helpful and they have been running center of gravity tests and through all their modules and testing in their classes,” says Weaver.
So the question remains. Will the craft be made out of blue jeans?
“No, We have blue and white material so and we are defiantly going to have something with Ole Miss on it. Hotty Toddy,” says Weaver.
So no matter what football team you root for, The Blue Delta Jean Team will be representing Mississippi as a whole.
The group will be heading out to Dallas, Texas on Thursday for the event.
