Video: Troopers Ready for New Texting While Driving Ban

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -Beginning July 1st you can no longer can’t write, send or read text messages, emails or social media messages while driving

It will be illegal in Mississippi, but how do officers plan to enforce it?

Before the new law, Mississippi only banned texting for drivers under 18, and school bus drivers.

Law enforcement say they can look at a phone if there is probable cause it was being used during an accident.

” If we do feel a cell phone or another electronic device was used in a crash, especially if it’s a fatal crash and it’s going to be part of the investigation through the driver, then yes we can use that phone as evidence or to look to see if it was on there but otherwise we wouldn’t look at your phone, we have to have some kind of reason.”

After July1st of next year, the fine will increase from $25.00 to $100.00.
