Video: Travis Childers Issues Debate Challenge to Thad Cochran

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Democratic challenger for Mississippi’s U.S Senate seat is pressing longtime Republican Senator Thad Cochran to commit to a debate. Former Congressman Travis Childers says he has already accepted an invitation from the University of Mississippi’s School of Journalism to debate Senator Cochran.

Last week, Senator Cochran said he had just heard of Childers’ request to debate, and said his campaign would look at the possibility of a debate. Childers says the voters deserve to hear both men in a debate format.

“We’ve been traveling the state from the Tennessee state line to Gulf of Mexico , from Alabama state line to Mississippi River. We’ve been doing the same thing, trying to listen to people more than we talk, quite frankly and they are interested in talking about issues , as I’ve said, this long divisive primary, I think people are ready to move on.”

Childers says the expansion of low cost healthcare to low income residents will be a priority of his in the US Senate.
