HAMILTON, Miss. (WCBI) – A train wreck in Hamilton this afternoon has left one man injured and residents upset about another train accident.
A train collided with a Chevy Malibu at Stovall Crossing Road in Hamilton around 12:30 Thursday afternoon. First responders believe 50-year old Jessie Thomas’ car was stalled on the track. The crossing was closed for several hours, causing residents to use an alternate route.
“Traffic will have to re-route itself for about 10 miles back around to a rock road, which is more inconvenient right now than it would be if it was paved,” says Bernard Smith, a long-time Hamilton resident.
Monroe County authorities say Thomas just recently moved from New York to Hamilton and may not have been aware of his surroundings. Some Hamilton residents say this intersection has always been dangerous.
“You really have to look both ways when you get to this track and several people have gotten hurt. Several people have gotten killed on this track,” says Laverne Lindsey, a Hamilton resident for many years.
“Since I’ve lived in Stovall bottom several accidents have happened at this very crossing and we haven’t been aggressive enough as far as getting a light at this exit,” says Smith.
Residents say they’d like to see some changes made at the track.
“Railroad crossings with flashing lights and let us know when the train is coming so that we can make the proper adjustments to stop and take our time,” says Lindsey.
Thomas was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle but suffered only minor injuries.
