TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Parents and educators have an opportunity to hear from an expert on dyslexia this evening. It’s part of an effort by the Tupelo Public School District to provide information and resources on a controversial topic. WCBI’s Allie Martin shows us how the district is helping those students struggling to read.
Charles Wallace is leading students through exercises designed to strengthen their reading skills.
Students who struggle with reading are sent to an interventionist.
“Working in small groups with students throughout the day, targeting skills they need to be better readers,” said Karen Logan, a Special Education Director with the district.
It’s one way to help students who deal with dyslexia, or other reading disorders.
Another way is to organize a workshop called “ Dyslexia: What Every Educator and Parent Should Know.”
Presenter Dr. Cena Holifield is co founder of Dynamic Dyslexia Design, The 3D School located in Petal.
“What we’re hoping to do is learn some great strategies to help them overcome some of the issues that they have, there’s some really good research based strategies out there that deal with phonetics and helping children crack a code. And we just want our teachers to be able to identify a strategy that works best with our struggling readers,” said Genna McAlpin, a Special Education Director.
Experts say one in five children has trouble reading. While there is no cure or one perfect solution, awareness, educational workshops, and understanding are keys to offering dyslexic students the same opportunities as their fellow students.
That workshop takes place at 6 at the Hancock Leadership Center. The Mississippi Department of Education, along with Regional Rehab help sponsor the workshop.
