CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — She’s the valedictorian in the class with a 4.0 grade point average, an ace pitcher on the mound, and has her team in the playoffs.
Choctaw County Lady Charger Makenzie Toombs has her softball team ten wins away from a first state title in school history.
Ace pitcher Makenzie Toombs has thrown sixty strikeouts on the mound this season for the Choctaw County Lady Chargers softball team.
Toombs and her team are preparing for the first round of the playoffs on Friday at Perry Central.
“It’s just coming out here every day working hard on the fundamentals. They’re good athletes and they can do anything and just getting better every day,” Toombs said.
Choctaw County softball coach Mike Brown has seen Toombs pitching improve tremendously from last season. Last season, she finished with a 5.03 earn run average. Now in her senior season, she has a 2.03 earn run average.
“She’s always done extra things to make us better. She’s improved that much this year. Her pitching in the circle has really helped us with our success as a team this year,” Brown said.
Senior teammates Brennan Power and Keirra Fair have classes with the straight A student, and they also know what to expect from her on the field or in the classroom.
“She and I have grown up together, and she’s just been really encouraging. She puts in a lot of work to be good at what she does,” said teammate Brennan Power.
“She really encourages us to do better. For a person to be so quiet, she really has team spirit, and she’s really a good player,” adds another teammate Keirra Fair.
Following high school, Toombs will enroll at Itawamba Community College and major in Elementary Education. She also will play softball for the Lady Indians.
“It’s an awesome program, and they have some great girls on the team, and great coaches, and it’s just going to be a fun time,” Toombs said.
Toombs high school softball career is coming to a close. She is looking to finish it off with a state championship win in a few weeks.
“That’s something that we’ve worked for every year, and this year we have a really good chance. We just have to work hard this week to get better, and just do the little things right and we’ll be good to go this week,” Toombs said.
Choctaw County travels to Perry Central on Friday for the first round of the playoffs at 6:30 pm.
