Video: There’s An Idea For A Gas Tax Hike In Mississippi
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – State lawmakers will get a $6.1 billion dollar budget to work with in the upcoming legislative session.
They’ll also be working on ways to pay for fixing roads.
One idea being floated around is a gas tax hike.
Lawmakers haven’t developed a comprehensive statewide road plan since 1987.
Senator Chuck Younger says he’s in favor of the tax.
“Everybody pays. Outside people out of the state pay. It’s an equal pay and we need it big time for our structure in Mississippi, our bridges, for our roads. They’re deteriorating, they’re washing out from underneath us. I mean, we need it big time.”
Younger says it’s time for lawmakers to do something about the issue.
Some Republican leaders have already said they will not support a gas tax increase.
