COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Two unique pieces of Columbus history join forces this weekend. And it could set the stage for more major partnerships between historic Mississippi University for Women and the community.
MUW has been around for 127 years. And for 44 years, the community has hosted a Decorative Arts and Antique forum that has brought history buffs and furniture experts from across the country. This year, the two have joined forces. Together, the two will celebrate the reopening of Poindexter Hall, one of the university’s most treasured buildings.
“Poindexter has recently been renovated, it’s been a six year project and we are very excited that it is about to be officially open and our students are really excited they’re going to get to use this wonderful new building,” said Andrea Steven, MUW Foundation Director.
Poindexter was built in 1905. It was named for famed music teacher Weenona Poindexter who spent 50 years building the university’s music program into one of the best in the country. The building and its newly restored glory will be dedicated in a ceremony at 3 Friday afternoon. But the weekend is more than just about the university.
With the decorative arts show coming to MUW for the first time, vendors are excited to bring their items on the universities campus.
“Oh I think it’s real exciting, I think a new venue in these beautifully restored building and every within walking distance of each other, I think it’s going to be a great weekend. We’re bringing American Country and formal furniture and a nice selection of silver, hollow wear, and flat silver. Hopefully a general mix so they’ll be something for everyone,” said vendor Pie Fincher.
University and community leaders say bringing together these pieces of Columbus history is a way to broaden the university’s impact on the community.
It’s wonderful for both MUW and the community and we certainly hope to do more of these type of events in the future.
The decorative arts forum kicks off tonight and continues through Saturday in Cochran Hall. MUW also has other events scheduled.
