COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tenn-Tom Transportation Museum officially opens its doors for visitors Friday. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday afternoon at the Downtown Columbus location.
The interactive museum has artifacts from when the 234 mile waterway system was built and then opened in 1985. It also highlights the transportation system of water, rail, and highways along the river.
Private donations and grant money helped pay for the facility. Tenn-Tom officials say the museum will provide a lot of information visitors may not know.
“From here, we’re going to open it up to the schools. We’re going to send brochures out to all the schools, where the school kids can come up here in groups and see what transportation’s all about. And transportation and recreation on the waterway, and how it affects commerce, and how it affects every body’s life.”
The museum will be open Monday through Friday from 8 until 5. Special programs will also be available for visitors.
