JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Teacher pay raise proposals are gaining momentum at the Mississippi Capitol. Senators unanimously passed a plan today to give teachers an additional $1500.00 this July 1st and another $1,000.00 a year later. After that teachers could become eligible for merit raises.
The House passed its own teacher pay raise plan in early February. It would provide $4, 250.00 over four years, but experienced teachers would have to meet certain criteria to collect the full amount.
The chambers must agree on a single plan before anything can go to Republican Governor Phil Bryant, who has said that he generally favors increasing Teachers’ compensation. The House could accept the Senate plan, or the two chambers could negotiate.
