MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Tuesday evening, a threat was made on a social media site to harm to those at a Monroe County School.
Now, local deputies have a student who attends a Monroe County school in custody. But what consequences does a threat like this have? Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says its a serious crime.
After an ‘all-call’ was given, parents came to Monroe County schools to pick up their kids.
There were no signs of danger and all the campuses were cleared.
But Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell has a serious warning for the suspect who is now in custody.
“We will not put up with this kind of stuff that’s going on. If you make a threat against the school, you’re going to jail and you’re going to pay the consequences of what you did,” said Sheriff Cantrell.
The Monroe County School District released a statement re-guarding the threat. Superintendent Scott Cantrell says the district felt it was best to release students at noon.
Sheriff Cantrell says it’s better to be prepared and make sure everyone can get home safe.
“First of all, we want to get the children in a safe place. We want to make sure our faculty is in a safe place and we want to make sure that nobody is going to enter this campus even with students here or not students and cause any harm to anyone,” said Sheriff Cantrell.
While the investigation continues, Sheriff Cantrell says the suspect will be punished to the full extent of the law.
“They’re going to pay for what they did. We’re not going to tolerate this in our county. We’re not going to have the pandemonium and the scare factor throughout the community. It’s wrong and we’re not going to have it,” said Sheriff Cantrell.
The suspect will face a judge Wednesday afternoon and charges are expected to be filed.
