Video: Students Learn CPR To Beat Of Popular Disco Era Song
GUNTOWN, MISS. (WCBI) – Claire Harrelson is on a mission to make sure these students know what to do if they see someone having a heart attack As a certified CPR instructor, Harrelson teaches the students how to perform hands only CPR.
Although they aren’t getting certified, 300 students will know what to do when seconds count.
“If everyone of those was exposed to the new CPR, where it’s dial 9 1 1 push hard and fast , how many people could they save or how many people would be exposed to that,” said GMS Science Teacher Connie Gusmus.
The kids are also being exposed to a disco era song whose beat mimics the rhythm the new CPR technique follows, the song is the Bee Gees hit, “Stayin Alive.”
“That’s a good idea because a lot of people, you could be doing it a lot slower than you need to be and that would not be good because it wouldn’t be doing anything,” said GMS Student Erin Wiggington.
Harrelson brings along an automated external defibrillator, or an AED, to show students the proper way to use the life saving device.
Like alomost everything else in thw world there is also an APP for finding AED’s
“They use Google Maps to do that, so all kids know about APPS, I think they’re the ones who brought it to our attention. I feel like they can run the AED better than any adults so I feel like they can be the difference in saving a life,” Harrelson said.
Studies show that only eight percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital or medical setting survive. That’s one reason Guntown Middle School held the classes.
