Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Ty Jones, Pontotoc HS, Basketball
PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — Pontotoc senior Ty Jones is a force on the court for opponents that have to guard him. Jones also plans to study in Mathematics Education next year in college with his current 3.2 grade point average.
Ty Jones is been a four year starter for the Pontotoc Warriors basketball team. This season Jones is averaging over twenty points and nine rebounds per game. He has also enjoyed being a heart of a warrior.
“The atmosphere is real good. I love it here. I love how everybody comes here and supports the Warriors and everything. I love how our student section is here. They are always hype. I love it,” said Student Athlete Ty Jones.
Jones works hard off the court. His teammate and head coach sees that leadership in him.
“Ty is liked by many people at his school. People see Ty as he’s just laughing, talking, and having a good time,” said junior teammate John Fleming.
“He’s hard worker, but he can really adapt to whatever the situation is. If you’ll watch him during the break, he gravitates from group to group, and it’s kind of he fits where ever he is. I’ll just sit there and watch. He’ll be in this group completely fitting in, and he’ll go to the next group. I think that’s what stands out to me about him,” adds head coach Chris Vandiver.
Last month Jones signed to continue playing basketball at Charleston Southern University, and when he toured the campus, he just fell in love with it.
“It was a great campus. A beautiful campus. It’s ride outside of Charleston. It’s like the new versus of New Orleans. It’s real good. I love it,” Jones said.
He has scored over fifteen hundred career points at Pontotoc. Jones also wants Charleston Southern to know what kind of player they are going to get next year.
“They are going to have a great player coming through. I know a great passer, great shooter, great scorer, and I’m a great defender. Especially a great rebounder,” Jones adds.
Pontotoc Warriors will be back in action on Friday when they host the defending 4-a state champions the Corinth Warriors.
