COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI Sports) — It was an exciting weekend last Saturday for the Columbus Christian Academy Boys Basketball team. The Rams won their first M-A-I-S double A State Title in school history. Now they were in Clinton Wednesday competing in the overall state tournament.
The Columbus Christian Academy School is still buzzing after a M-A-I-S double A State title win in Canton last Saturday. The C-C-A Rams have finally gotten over the hump after being defeated in the quarter-finals the previous two years and now have a state championship under their belt.
“The last two years we’ve lost in the quarter-finals with the last round of eight and then this year we finally broke through that. That was awesome getting pass that and winning the semi-finals in overtime and then pulling it out at the state-championship game. It was awesome,” said Senior Forward Aaron Meek.
“It just felt like a load off our chest and getting past that round, then beating West Memphis, then coming out there and winning it all and beating Canton on their home floor. It felt good,” said Sophomore Guard RJ Deloach.
“It was just exciting watching the guys as time ticked down. The excitement they had and the accomplishment they had and the accomplishment it was after the previous two years getting close and then going down there this year we felt like we were the team to beat,” said Head Coach Greg Watkins.
Now after winning a state title, the Rams are competing in their first overall state tournament and are three wins away from having another goal accomplished and it would be huge to win two state titles for the team.
“I think it would be cool because we are not just doing it for ourselves. We are doing it for the school, we are doing it for the city, the community, and for God,” Meek said.
“It would mean a lot. I mean all the hard work is just finally paying off,” Deloach said.
“Going down there and winning that you know that would be the ultimate prize. Winning the state champion was awesome and big accomplishment, and first year ever going down there and competing in the overall, so winning that would just be ultimate,” Watkins said.
Columbus Christian Academy fell short to Jackson Prep on Wednesday 58 to 32. Rams finish the season with a record of 28 and 8 overall.
