Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Cole Williams, Smithville HS, Baseball

SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Smithville won the school’s first-ever state baseball title last year. This year, Senior catcher and right fielder Cole Williams hopes to use what he learned from last year’s seniors to help the Seminoles to another trip to Pearl.

“It was definitely one to remember for the books, that’s for sure. a memory that seniors last year and this year on down the line we will never forget it,” said Student Athlete Cole Williams.

“It just started off with a good group of seniors last year and it trickled down to the players that we have and everybody just buying into a system and everybody playing together as a family,” said Head Coach Stephen Kerr.

He was the District’s Offensive Player of the Year last year and as the team’s starting catcher, he has to be leader. His coach and teammates say he’s adapted well to the responsibility.

“He brings a good bit of leadership. He’s always firing everybody up,” said teammate Kyle Noe.

“He’s always been a positive attitude and a motivator on the team. One of the best ones to pick everybody up and not get down,” said teammate Micah Mccain.

“He’s got great leadership. If you’re in a bad mood, he’s going to pick you up, make sure you’re doing everything right. He’s just that type of player,” said teammate Neil Knight.

“He’s a very special player individual. Cole is someone who is going to give you everything he has all the time. He believes in doing things right,” said Kerr.

The same determination that has guided him on the baseball and football fields and in the classroom will guide Cole into his career as a Veterinary technician.

“I really like animals and I really like to be outside so I wouldn’t won’t to be like an in office vet, but I would like to be out in the field on like farm calls and just being outside,” said Williams.

And he knows something about carrying on school and community traditions. His mother and father, Julie and Greg Williams, were classmates in the Smithville class of 1996.

Smithville returns to action tomorrow when they host the Aggies of Hamilton, Alabama.
