Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Amory HS Slow-Pitch Softball

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — The Amory Lady Panthers Slow Pitch Softball Team is off to an undefeated start on the season. They won the Monroe county Softball Tournament two weeks ago and are lead by four seniors on the team this season and are wanting more as the season continues. WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo has more with this week’s CO Student Athletes of the Week.

Erin Griffith, Savannah Nelson, Carley Westbrook and Brianna Sloan are all taking advanced courses in their final year at Amory. These seniors have been playing softball together since seventh grade, but one thing they are missing is a state championship.

“It has been a long sixteen years since Amory won a state championship in slow-pitch softball. we have to go back to all the way to the 1999 season. The last two years they’ve made it to Ridgeland, and ran into Newton County. They say this year they hope it’s the turnaround. Third time the charm. They say their eager to get back and win a state title,” said WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo.

“We’ve been working really hard and I think we’re coming back really stronger this year,” said CO-Student Athlete Erin Griffith.

“We didn’t have seniors last year and we didn’t lose anybody this year, so we or to come back stronger and hopefully third times the charm,” said CO-Student Athlete Savannah Nelson.

“I think we are really eager to get back. It kind of sucks going there two years in a row and not being able to make it, but I think we will have it this year,” said CO-Student Athlete Carley Westbrook.

“We’ve been working really hard this year. I think this is the hardest year we’ve been so far and I’m really excited,” said CO-Student Athlete Brianna Sloan.

“The girls are very hungry this year to try to get back. It’s tough to get there. It’s a reward within it self, but to come short two years in a row I think their eager to take another shot at it,” said Head Softball Coach Chris Pace.

To win a state championship for the city of Amory would be huge for the community and Ninth-Year Head Coach Chris Pace says they have had a lot of support since he’s been here.

“We need something. It would be very good for the community and the city. Got a lot of support here. We’ve had support here since I’ve been here. That’s not a question. I think we sort of owe it to them. It would be one good way for these four to go out. It would be something they could give back,” said Pace.

The Amory Lady Panthers will return to action Thursday evening when they travel to face the Hatley Lady Tigers.
