TUPELO, MS (WCBI)-Mississippi’s Superintendent of Education says it’s time to put more emphasis on early childhood education and also pay public school teachers in the state a competitive wage. Dr. Carey Wright, Mississippi Superintendent of Education, spoke to the Tupelo Rotary Club this afternoon. she tackled a long list of subjects such as Common Core, teacher pay and improving student scores statewide. Dr. Wright says she will continue to push for full implementation of Common Core standards, despite objections by some in the public and private sector. While there has been debate in the legislature over merit based pay or across the board pay raises for teachers, Wright says teachers deserve a pay raise.
“Firm believer that all teachers need to be paid very well for the job that they do and I think that since Mississippi ranks very low on that, I think it’s long over due for teachers to get pay raises. They do an amazing job each and everyday and that’s where all the magic takes place is in the classroom. So they certainly deserve the pay for the hard work that they do.”
Dr. Wright has been state superintendent since November. Prior to coming to Mississippi, she was president and CEO of Wright Approach Consulting. she was Chief Academic Officer for the District of Columbia Public School System.
