JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — The Senate turns back efforts to reject all Common Core standards but does go forward with a committee to draft the state’s own version of tougher academic goals.
The 27-person committee of educators, parents and others named by the Legislature would have to make recommendations to the state Board of Education by the end of this year. It would not be banned from using some of the standards included in Common Core.
Some conservatives want the state to do more than just rename Common Core because they think its an effort by the federal government to dictate local school district policy.
