STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) The first day of school is right around the corner and families in Starkville are preparing for the big day.
“We’ve been shopping for school clothes, picking out shoes, getting her pencils and her backpack,” said mother Denise Kelly.
After weeks of shopping and preparation, parents are still getting last minute items for their child to go back to school. Emerson Family School in Starkville teamed up with Southwire and Walmart to provide free school supplies for hundreds of students.
Student Roderck Ellis said, “We came to get school supplies and we’re having fun. I got some Germ X and stuff and we watched a puppet show.”
“We came for some pencils and information and books- they have a great book up here,” said Kelly.
LaShonda McNeal and her husband both work in Lowndes County schools. She says some students come into the year unprepared but events like these minimize that risk.
“My favorite part was just seeing everybody come in and just get everything and they’re excited about getting ready for school,” said McNeal.
Health screenings and games were also available for children. Emerson family school formerly hosted the event at their building, but after outgrowing the location they moved to the Starkville Sportsplex.
The Back to School Bash has been sponsored by Emerson Family School since 2008.
