Video: Special Olympians Hit the Pool in Tupelo

Tupelo, Miss. (WCBI) – It was a chance for Special Olympians to show their aquatic skills this evening.The fourth annual SPLASH, Special Olympics Swim Meet attracted hundreds at the Tupelo Aquatics Center. The event is a qualifier for the swim team to compete at the state level in Biloxi. More than 25 competitors took part in events such as a pool walk, freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and other contests. Organizers say the event allows contestants see what it is like to practice and compete.
“This gives them a chance to belong to a team and gain self confidence and health component, just being able to get physical activity and also to get , water is a great equalizer, we have a individual who uses a wheelchair but when he gets in the water he’s able to ambulate just like we are”
The State meet is set for Mother’s Day weekend.
