VIDEO: Special Election Buzz and More
GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI) – There’s more than just a hospital sale voters must decide on Tuesday.
A spot in the Mississippi House of Representatives is on the ballot and voters outside of Oktibbeha County are also impacted.
Oktibbeha County is election central next week, with the OCH issue, and three county races on the ballot, but the District 38 race covers three counties.
What if you threw an election and nobody came?
That might just happen Tuesday at least in Lowndes County.
“Probably, a very low turn out if any. We only have one precinct here in the county, that people are allowed to vote in this special election, which is the Artesia precinct,” says Lowndes County Circuit Clerk, Teresa Barksdale.
So far, no one has cast an absentee ballot in Lowndes County.
That’s compared to the 455 absentee ballots already cast in Oktibbeha County.
The buzz in Starkville and Oktibbeha County is barely a blip in Artesia.
“You see all of them over the fields up town, every where, in the neighborhood, but if you come to Artesia, you can hardly see any,” says resident, Derrick Harris.
Barksdale says there is another big reason the election is going unnoticed here.
“That stems from no candidates being from Lowndes and the primary focus is on the Oktibbeha races.”
Regardless of how many voters show up at the polls in Lowndes County, election costs will still happen.
“Anywhere from $2,000 dollars to $2,5oo dollars because we have to have workers for the election day. We’ve had to have IT people that’s helped us set the election up, so right now, I don’t really know a ball park figure, I mean, I can give a pall bark figure but right now I don’t have an accurate figure, says Barksdale.
Lowndes, Clay, and Oktibbeha County Courthouses will open at 8 and close at 12 on Saturday for absentee voters.
