COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -From finding the perfect gifts to fighting long lines this time of the year can be stressful. WCBI’s Britney Blanchard explores the true meaning of Christmas.

“What do you want for Christmas?”

“Barbie Camper”

“Legos”

“A Ding Dong Castle”

“A balloon”

But ask a different generation the same question, and you will get completely different answers.

“I guess I’d have to say my mother.”

“I’d like to see everybody happy”

Christmas has changed over the years.

“We were a family and we gathered as a family for things and family had a big meaning then.”

But as we approach one of the biggest holidays, it is important to recall the true meaning of Christmas

“Christmas has always been a giving time, a sharing time.”

Although we often lose sight of that with the glitz and glam of gifting. Over the years Christmas has become a way to show off wealth and less about family. According to American Research Group, shoppers say they are planning to spend over $800.00 on presents this year.

Now, we all love to see a tree filled with gifts beneath, but there was a time when Christmas simply meant spending time with those you love.

“We always had a big family dinner on Christmas.”

It is time to enjoy old family photos, telling stories, and expressing how grateful you are. It is also a time for reaching out and providing for those less fortunate.

“We see people that need things and we think, of that is so sad, and we keep right on going. That is sad.”

By helping others and making lasting memories with those around us, we are sure to all be filled with joy.

“We’re going to sing Christmas songs.”
