NORTHEAST MISS. (WCBI) -The winter weather hit parts of our viewing area early this morning, and affected daily routines of many residents.
This is what Union county residents woke up to Friday morning.
While the blanket of snow looked like a postcard, slick streets meant dispatchers at Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop F were busy.
“The trooper out there says there’s a man with a tractor pulling cars out.”
Whenever there is sleet and snow, MHP troopers know they may have to work extra hours.
“Our troopers , they’re all on call, those that are off duty, those that may be on vacation time, they call back and so then we will utilize our manpower as the need arises.”
Throughout Union County, crews were putting rock salt on bridges to give motorists better traction.
“It melts the snow and ice where it won’t be slick.”
Not everyone was working.
“It’s bumpy, it’s fast.”
Vance and Parks Smith both work for the New Albany School District, so they were enjoying the snow day with daughters Dorro and Julia.
‘We are excited it finally came, we were a little skeptical at first, but we’re glad it’s here.”
In Pontotoc, businesses may have been opened, but the snow day had a definite impact.
“We were full today, and now I am down to two, very slow, cut it back, we had a pageant today, they have cancelled it until tomorrow.”
And on the Town Square, this brother and sister team used what snow they had, to make a junior snowman and the discovered a new, cheap snack.
“You never run out of snow snacks as long as you have snow. ”
